Places on the bicycle route: Albernau

Albernau, one of the threesome along with Zschorlau and Burkhardtsgrün, is the village with the most recent history. The settlement of this place began in the Middle Ages. The oldest written reference dates back to 1524. The first building in town was the “Freigut Albernau” (an estate). This property developed into a village from 1524-1533. Erasmus Schindler, the owner of the property, purchased a plot near the Mulde River in 1649 and set the foundation for the Schindler factory. This was where cobalt blue dye was produced, which was invented in 1620 by the glassmaker Christof Schürer. In 1947 the district headquarters in Aue ordered the demolition of historical buildings on this property.

Other sights are the church in the village center and the “Kanzel” – a viewpoint from where you can enjoy a spectacular view overlooking the Mulde River valley. The 15.3 km long Flossgraben canal is worth mentioning. Its origin goes back to the year 1554. It was used to supply the mines and mills or the Schlema and Schneeberg mining regions with wood, and is considered a mine surveying masterpiece. One of the oldest taverns, the Rechenhaus, is still standing where the Flossgraben canal begins.
